How to add a WhatsApp button to your website
A WhatsApp link opens a chat with you in one tap, without the customer saving your number. Here’s how to build it.
For many customers, messaging on WhatsApp is easier than calling. WhatsApp has a feature called click to chat: a link that opens a conversation with your number, even if the person hasn’t saved it.
The link
The format is wa.me/ followed by your full phone number in international format. WhatsApp says to omit any zeros, brackets or dashes. For example, a US or Puerto Rico number starts with 1 and the area code.
With a pre-filled message
You can add a message that appears ready to send, like “Hi, I’d like to book an appointment”. It goes at the end of the link with ?text= and the URL-encoded message. Your developer or site builder can do it in a minute.
Where to put it
- At the top, on the first screen, next to the call button.
- Floating in a corner, especially on phones.
- At the end of every service page.
- On your contact page.
If you offer WhatsApp, reply quickly. An automatic away message (available in WhatsApp Business) tells people when you’ll get back to them.
